READER OF THE MONTH: Byron Kingsley Chua, 4B

Our January Reader of the Month is IB Diploma Program student, Byron Kingsley Chua of H4B.  Read what Byron has to say about his favorites, his reading idols and the HS LRC.

Favorite Book

My favorite book is Eragon, the first book of a trilogy which has been my favorite since High 1.  Eragon is the main character’s name and the story is set on medieval times.  It circles around the life of Eragon that is dramatically changed when he discovered that dragons and magic exist.

Favorite Author

My favorite author is a tie between Christopher Paolini, the author of Eragon and J.K. Rowling.  I am a big fan of Harry Potter as well.

Who got you into reading?

I would say that it was my grade school English teacher that introduced me to reading.  At home, however, my mom loved to read books, and I think I got my reading interest from her.

On fiction and non-fiction

I prefer to read fiction. I think it’s a way for me to escape from reality, and just enjoy a good story now and then.  I also like the fact that my imagination goes wild trying to picture the scenes going on while I am reading.

For IB, I am in the process of writing a paper on the Chinese Migrants in the Philippines.  “The Encyclopedia of the Chinese Overseas”, that I borrowed from the library is very helpful for my research.

Coming from a senior’s perspective, the high school library is very much appropriate for learning, as well as for leisure.  There is a wide variety of books to choose from, even comic books.  There are more than enough chairs, tables and other facilities to help make the library experience more comfortable.  The one thing I will miss the most is the staff. The staff are always welcoming and more than ready to help the students in any way they can.  Not only that, they make great friends as well. Our librarians are doing their best to help us, I think we should do our best to help them as well. Something as simple as saying “Good Morning!” and asking “How are they” with a smile on your face already brightens up their day, so what are you waiting for? head to the library to learn and make friends!
